CVE-2026-123588
📛 CVE Title
Hickory DNS Recursive Resolver Denial of Service via Cached Empty Connection Pool
Description
The recursive resolver in Hickory DNS (all versions of the hickory-recursor crate, and hickory-resolver 0.26.0 before 0.26.2) caches an empty connection pool when it follows a referral with no glue records and all queries for the name servers' IP addresses fail. An attacker able to spoof DNS responses can make these lookups fail, causing all subsequent queries for the affected zone to fail until the cache entry expires or is evicted.

Vulnerability Summary Hickory DNS, specifically the hickory-recursor crate (all versions) and hickory-resolver versions 0.26.0 before 0.26.2, caches an empty connection pool. This occurs when it processes a referral lacking glue records and all attempts to query name server IP addresses fail. An attacker who can spoof DNS responses can force these lookups to fail. Consequently, all subsequent ...

Remediation fully removes a vulnerability by fixing its root cause — through a patch , code fix , or system replacement. Mitigation reduces the risk of exploitation without removing the flaw itself, using controls like network segmentation or access restrictions.
